Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, made up 1/3 of the Beastie Boys. Much like Helm, the contributions that Yauch has made to the American music landscape cannot be understated. The Beasties broke down racial barriers as some of the first white hip-hop stars while helping to bring hip-hop to a mainstream audience. The band also revolutionized the art of sampling with 1989′s Paul’s Boutique (You think Girl Talk is original? Take a listen to the mash-ups on Paul’s Boutique).

Yauch also had a career outside of the Beasties with his own film production company and was also a co-founder of the Milarepa Fund, which raised money for the Tibetan Freedom movement.

Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, but continued his work with the Beasties Boys and released Hot Sauce Committee in 2011. The band was also inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame just last month.

Our old pals The Broderick are gearing up to release their their new full length EP and they’ve decided to give the world this little sneak peak.

The guys won our first JanSport Battle Of the Bands back in 2009 and have been continuing to gain steam with the release of an EP in late 2010 and near constant playing throughout the mid-West.

We’re expecting big things for the guys if the rest of this album rocks as hard as this cut. Check out “Lost In Static”.

Brooklyn avant-indie group Here We Go Magic has a killer new LP due out May 8th, but you can listen to A Different Ship in it’s entirety right here, right now.

The band has the vibe of a stripped down Grizzly Bear and a bit of the dancey grooves of  Bear In Heaven. Whatever the parts, the sum is pretty cool.

Here We Go Magic is kicking off a three month odyssey that will take the band across three continents for and include sets at Bonnaroo and several major European festivals. Check out where you can see them here.

In our first installment of “Listen to this”, we’re featuring Brooklyn based freak-afro-funk-pop band Rubblebucket. The band just released a killer live CD/DVD combo entitled Live In Chicago that presents a pretty good picture of Rubblebucket’s party of a live show. We’re hooking you up with a free mp3 of “Breatherz (Young As Clouds)” from the disc, and you can watch it on video down below.

The band has been touring the country on their most recent studio release, Omega La La. The disc was produced by Eric Broucek (LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Holy Ghost) and mastered by Joe Lambert (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors.) The record has received mega acclaim, with Paste magazine having this to say:

“Joyous jungles of worldly pop-funk, instrumentally rich but catchy enough to ass-kick Katy Perry off the pop charts (in a just world)—mega-melodic without sacrificing an ounce of atmosphere or creativity.”

Spin called Rubblebucket a “must hear artist”, and our favorite piece of press comes from Sf Weekly who described the band as “What it sounds like when eight different freak flags fly in perfect unison”
