Meet The Broderick

March 9, 2010  |  Uncategorized

So, you might be wondering who this band is that we’re taking to SXSW. Here’s a closer look at them, along with their recent coverage on Urb.com.

Where do you guys call home?

Bloomington, IN

Where did the name, “The Broderick,” originate?

It’s 1930’s slang for a brawl or a thorough beating.

Where does the inspiration for your songs come from?

Everything…friends, family, rain, sun, snow, good times, BBQ, etc.  It’s amazing where a song comes from sometimes.

Do you write your own songs?

Derick Thebro writes every note, beat, and lyric.  His process is as secret as the Colonel’s chicken.

Are you working on anything new at the moment?

We’ve been working on new songs and a summer tour.  There is also talk of a full length in the near future.  But…Derick’s ideas are always better, so we’ll see what he thinks.

What is your favorite song and why?

There is a place in our hearts for every song we write.  Usually we get really excited about new songs, so as of now, “Dancing for the Dogs” is a favorite.  It’s got soul and pizzazz, two things that are required in all our songs.

What’s on your playlists these days? (what you’re listening to)

Avett Brothers, Hayes Carll, Timber Timbre, Le Loup, Lil Wayne, Haha Tonka, Islands, Drive By Truckers, Heartless Bastards, D’Angelo.  No one does smooth R&B like D’Angelo.

How did you come to work with JanSport?

We won an online battle of the bands…it was love at first backpack.

What are your hopes for the near future?

Eric wants to learn how to whistle.  Quinten is just a few hours short of getting his pilot’s license.  John is working on perfecting his facial hair.  Max is taking time off to be a high school basketball referee.

Who do you consider your musical influences?

The biggies; Huey Lewis & the News, Shatner, Dre, Britny Fox.

What has been your favorite place to perform?

The Mercury Lounge in NYC…great venue.

Tell us about your most memorable performance to date.

Forecastle Festival in Louisville, KY was quite a treat.  We played well and the crowd grew exponentially as it went on.

What are you looking fwd to most at sxsw?

Playing SXSW has been a goal (actually more of a dream) since the conception of the band.  It isn’t possible to pinpoint the most anticipated moment at SXSW, but we can say for sure there is nothing better than the mixture of authentic BBQ joints, Lone Star beer, and rock n roll.
