Greening the Greeks at UC Berkeley

Over this past weekend, JanSport sponsored the Greening the Greeks event at University of California, Berkeley.

Greening the Greeks is a student organization consisting of Cal Greek members that promote environmental awareness and sustainability within the fraternity and sorority community, especially in housing facilities and at Greek-sponsored events.

About 100 Cal students came out to learn ways to “green” their Greek house on campus through simple tips and also participate in an afternoon hike in the Berkeley Hills. JanSport was there to provide healthy snacks for the hike and also held a sample sale of JanSport outdoor product with all proceeds benefiting Big City Mountaineers, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving urban youth through outdoor expeditions.

The event was a success and over $500 was raised for Big City Mountaineers.

Summit for Someone Pairs Philanthropy and Climbing

Big City Mountaineers, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving urban youth through outdoor expeditions, announced the eighth season of its Summit for Someone fundraising climb service. Participants in the Summit for Someone program receive the chance to travel, climb the world’s premier mountains and impact the lives of urban youth by raising funds for Big City Mountaineers.

The schedule incorporates 24 separate climbs on 12 peaks including Mt. Rainier and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Summit for Someone climbs will generate over half a million dollars in revenue to support future expedition projects.

This year, the fundraiser will start with a group of industry leaders from Black Diamond, Backpacker magazine, Polartec, The North Face, Nike and others climbing The Grand Teton on September 15. During the trip, the leaders will discuss the future of Big City Mountaineers and how to work with community philanthropy as a whole.

This first climb will also significantly help fund a portion of the non-profit’s expedition missions which mentor urban youth in the outdoors. As Jon Dorn, Editor of Backpacker magazine said, “With the fundraising from these leaders alone, this climb will underwrite nearly the entire expedition program for one of four regions Big City Mountaineers operates from.”

Summit For Someone program is extending its low $500 deposit promotion for 10 more days!

Every spring, JanSport creates around 1,000 t-shirts in support of Big City Mountaineers‘ (BCM) summer trips and we received word today that they have arrived to the BCM offices. What’s more, they’re a huge hit!

Each one of BCM’s 2010 volunteers and each one of the teens who go on a Big City Mountaineers wilderness expedition, receives a BCM t-shirt. JanSport is thrilled to be a part of this transformational experience for these teens once again this year and wish them many exciting adventures all summer long!
